The area's modern history began with the arrival of the Church Missionary Society in the early 19th century, following the establishment of the Province of Freedom for freed African American and West Indian slaves. It was named after Saint Aureol, though the precise origin of this namesake remains a topic of local historical interest. The hill became a strategic location during colonial administration under the British Empire, with development accelerating in the post-World War II era. The decision to locate the nation's first university here in the 1960s permanently transformed its character from a quiet residential area into a bustling academic hub.

The defining institution on Mount Aureol is Fourah Bay College, the oldest university in West Africa, founded in 1827 and now a constituent college of the University of Sierra Leone. The road infrastructure, while paved, is often challenged by the steep gradients and heavy traffic, particularly during the academic year. The area is also served by the Freetown International Airport located in Lungi, with connecting ferry services across the Sierra Leone River.
