History

The franchise was awarded to Bob Naegele Jr. in 1997, returning the NHL to Minnesota after the departure of the Minnesota North Stars to Dallas in 1993. The team's name, selected through a fan contest, reflects the state's natural wilderness. Under the leadership of inaugural general manager Doug Risebrough and first head coach Jacques Lemaire, the Wild adopted a defensively structured system. The team's early pinnacle was a surprising run to the 2003 Western Conference Final, led by players like Marian Gaborik and Wes Walz.
