Millville, Indiana

Millville, Indiana is an unincorporated community in Greensboro Township, Henry County, within the U.S. state of Indiana. Situated in the east-central portion of the state, it is part of the New Castle Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was originally platted in 1836 and historically served as a local agricultural and milling center, taking its name from the early gristmill operations along Big Blue River.

History

The area that became Millville was originally inhabited by the Miami and Delaware nations before European-American settlement accelerated following the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818. The community was formally platted on March 26, 1836, by pioneers John H. Thompson and William B. Larsh, with the post office established the same year. Its early economy was dominated by a gristmill and sawmill powered by the Big Blue River, which also supported a woolen mill and a distillery. The arrival of the Cincinnati and Chicago Air-Line Railroad in the 1870s provided a brief period of growth, connecting local farmers to markets in Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Millville was a noted stop on the Underground Railroad, with several local homes serving as stations aiding freedom seekers traveling north toward Canada. The community's prominence gradually waned in the 20th century with the decline of rail service and the centralization of commerce in larger towns like New Castle.

Geography

Millville is located in southeastern Henry County at within Greensboro Township. The community lies in the Tipton Till Plain region of Indiana, characterized by flat to gently rolling terrain shaped by glacial activity. The Big Blue River, a tributary of the White River, flows just south of the community and was central to its early development. Millville is situated approximately six miles southeast of the county seat, New Castle, and about 45 miles east of Indianapolis. Major nearby transportation routes include State Road 38 and Interstate 70.

As an unincorporated community, Millville does not have defined population boundaries for separate census reporting; demographic data is aggregated within Greensboro Township and Henry County. The broader area is predominantly rural, with an economy historically based on agriculture, including corn and soybean production, and light manufacturing linked to the New Castle area. The population of the immediate Millville area has remained small and stable throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The community is served by the New Castle-Henry County Public Library system and falls within the Eastern Time Zone.

Education

Students from the Millville area attend schools within the Blue River Valley Schools district, which serves portions of Henry County and Wayne County. The district's single campus, Blue River Valley Jr./Sr. High School, is located southwest of Millville near the community of Mount Summit. Elementary students are served by Blue River Elementary School on the same campus. The district is part of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and competes in the Mid-Eastern Conference. For post-secondary education, residents have access to Ivy Tech Community College in New Castle and Indiana University East in Richmond.
