The development of Messe Wien was driven by the need to replace the older, scattered exhibition facilities in Vienna, such as those at the Wiener Stadthalle and the Hofburg Imperial Palace. The project was a significant urban development initiative for the city, situated on a former part of the Prater park known as the Krieau area, historically used for horse racing and other events. Its construction was closely tied to the expansion of the Vienna U-Bahn network, with the new U2 line being extended to serve the site directly. Since its inauguration, it has hosted landmark events including sessions of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and major segments of the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference, establishing itself as a venue for high-profile international diplomacy alongside commercial exhibitions.

The centre boasts a total of 60,000 square meters of flexible exhibition space across four modern halls, which can be configured for events ranging from large trade fairs like the International Motor Show to more intimate corporate presentations. A key feature is the integrated Austria Center Vienna congress facility, offering 19,000 square meters of space with multiple auditoriums, including a plenary hall for over 4,000 delegates, making it one of the largest conference venues in the country.
