Max Levchin is a Ukrainian-American entrepreneur, computer scientist, and investor, widely recognized as a central figure in the development of the modern digital payments industry. He co-founded the online payments system PayPal, serving as its founding Chief Technology Officer and contributing key innovations in fraud prevention and digital security. Levchin later founded the financial technology company Affirm and has been an active investor and board member for numerous technology startups through his venture firm SciFi VC.

Early life and education

Born in Kyiv when it was part of the Soviet Union, he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1991, settling in Chicago. His early interest in computer programming was fostered at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School. Levchin subsequently attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he earned a bachelor's degree in computer science in 1997. During his university years, he was involved with the Speech Processing Group and developed an early interest in cryptography and secure systems.

Career

His professional journey began with several startup attempts before a fateful meeting with Peter Thiel at Stanford University led to the 1998 founding of Confinity. This company developed a digital wallet service, which after a merger with Elon Musk's X.com, became the ubiquitous PayPal. As the chief technology officer, he architected the platform's pioneering anti-fraud and security systems, which were critical to its success against competitors like eBay's Billpoint. Following PayPal's initial public offering and subsequent acquisition by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, he became a member of the so-called PayPal Mafia, a group of former executives who became influential investors and founders. He then founded and served as CEO of Slide, a social media company focused on social networking service applications, which was acquired by Google in 2010.

Affyn

In 2012, he founded Affirm, a financial technology company offering transparent installment loans to consumers at the point of sale, with the mission of providing an alternative to traditional credit card debt. Under his leadership as CEO, Affirm grew significantly, forming key partnerships with major retailers like Walmart and Shopify and competing directly with services like Afterpay. The company went public via an initial public offering on the NASDAQ in January 2021, a landmark event for the buy now, pay later sector. He served as CEO until 2021, transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman to focus on product strategy.

Beyond his founding roles, he is a prolific investor and advisor through his venture capital firm SciFi VC, which has backed companies such as YouTube, Yelp, and SpaceX. He served on the board of directors for Yelp from 2004 to 2015 and for Etsy from 2015 to 2017. He is also a co-founder of Hard, Valuable, Fun, a lab for experimental projects, and Glow, a company focused on fertility and reproductive health data. He married Nellie Minkova in 2008, and the couple has three children.
