Massachusetts Route 115

Massachusetts Route 115 is a 9.87-mile (15.88 km) state highway in Essex County, Massachusetts. It provides a north-south connection between the communities of Lynnfield and North Andover, intersecting several major routes including Route 128 and U.S. Route 1. The route traverses a mix of residential and commercial areas, as well as sections of woodland and wetland near the Ipswich River.

Route description

Beginning at its southern terminus at Route 1A (Broadway) in Lynnfield, Route 115 heads north as Summer Street, passing the Lynnfield Centre Historic District and the Lynnfield Public Library. It crosses the Ipswich River and enters the town of North Reading, where it is known as Park Street and later Haverhill Street, running concurrently with Route 62 for a short distance. The route continues north into Andover, becoming Chandler Road and passing near the Harold Parker State Forest. It finally enters North Andover, where it runs as Chadwick Street before terminating at an intersection with Route 114 (Sutton Street) near the North Andover Middle School.

History

The alignment of Route 115 was originally a series of local town roads connecting the communities in central Essex County. It was designated as a state highway in the early 1930s as part of a broader numbering system implemented by the Department of Public Works. A significant realignment occurred in the mid-20th century with the construction of the Interstate 95/Route 128 corridor, which Route 115 crosses via an overpass. The route has seen incremental improvements over the decades, including bridge replacements over the Ipswich River and traffic signal installations at key junctions like the one with U.S. Route 1.
