Early life and rugby career

Born in Bedford, he was educated at Bedford School, where his athletic prowess began to emerge. Bayfield’s rugby career flourished with Bedford Blues, and his formidable line-out presence earned him a place in the England squad. He made his international debut against Argentina in 1991 and was a key member of the team that reached the 1991 Rugby World Cup Final at Twickenham Stadium, losing to Australia. Selected for the British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in 1993, he played in all three Test matches against the All Blacks. A serious neck injury sustained while playing for Northampton Saints ultimately forced his retirement from the sport in 1998.

Acting and media career

Following his rugby career, Bayfield moved into broadcasting, initially working as a reporter for ITV Sport on coverage of the English Premiership and World Cup tournaments. His imposing stature, standing at 6 feet 10 inches, led to his casting in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where he provided the physical performance for the young Rubeus Hagrid in flashback sequences, with Robbie Coltrane's face digitally superimposed. This role launched a secondary career in acting and stunt performing. He has since become a regular presenter on the BBC One programme Countryfile, reporting on rural affairs and outdoor activities. His media work also includes presenting for The One Show and serving as a team captain on the BBC Radio 5 Live sports quiz Fighting Talk.

He is married and has two children. Bayfield is a committed supporter of several charities, particularly those related to spinal cord injury research and support, influenced by the injury that ended his playing days. He has undertaken numerous fundraising challenges, including long-distance cycling events for Help for Heroes.
