Lawrence Wong is a Singaporean politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Singapore since 15 May 2024, succeeding Lee Hsien Loong. A member of the ruling People's Action Party, he previously held key cabinet positions including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance. His leadership is seen as marking the start of Singapore's fourth-generation political leadership, following his designation as the successor to Lee Hsien Loong by the PAP in April 2022.
Born in 1972, he attended Haig Boys' Primary School and later Tanjong Katong Secondary School before receiving a scholarship to study in the United States. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Michigan. Subsequently, he obtained a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School as part of the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship.
Before entering politics, he had a distinguished career in the Singapore Civil Service. He served as the Principal Private Secretary to then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong from 2005 to 2008. He also held senior roles at the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Finance, and was Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority. His public service contributions were recognized with the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2011.
He entered politics in the 2011 general election, contesting as part of a PAP team in West Coast GRC and was successfully elected. He was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education. After the 2015 election, where he moved to the newly formed Marsiling–Yew Tee GRC, he was promoted to full Minister, first serving as Minister for Culture, Community and Youth before taking on the portfolio of Minister for National Development.
He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in June 2022 and concurrently served as Minister for Finance. Following the planned leadership transition within the People's Action Party, he was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Singapore on 15 May 2024 at the Istana, with Gan Kim Yong as his Deputy Prime Minister. His premiership has focused on continuity, addressing economic challenges, and renewing the social compact, as outlined in his inaugural speech referencing the Forward Singapore exercise.
He is known for his focus on long-term economic restructuring, affordable public housing, and social inclusivity. As co-chair of the Multi-Ministry Taskforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped shape the nation's public health and economic response. He has articulated a vision for a "fresh, forward-looking" Singapore that balances growth with solidarity, often engaging citizens through platforms like the Forward Singapore initiative and dialogues on the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
He is married and maintains a relatively private family life. An accomplished guitarist, he has performed publicly with his band and is known to enjoy rock music. His personal interests and approachable style have been noted in media profiles by outlets like The Straits Times and Channel NewsAsia.
