La Salle Explorers

La Salle Explorers. The La Salle Explorers are the athletic teams representing La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Explorers compete in the NCAA Division I as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, fielding 21 varsity teams. The program's identity is deeply rooted in the university's Catholic and Lasallian educational traditions, with a history marked by national success in basketball and a commitment to broad-based athletic participation.

History

The intercollegiate athletics program at La Salle University began formal competition in the early 20th century, adopting the "Explorers" nickname in honor of the school's namesake, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. The men's basketball program, established in 1930, quickly rose to prominence under legendary coach Ken Loeffler, capturing the 1952 National Invitation Tournament title and the 1954 NCAA Championship led by star Tom Gola. This era cemented the Explorers' national reputation. The program later joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference before becoming a charter member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, now known as the Horizon League. In 1995, La Salle joined its current home, the Atlantic 10 Conference, aligning with other prominent Philadelphia institutions like Saint Joseph's University and Temple University. The women's athletics program gained full varsity status following the passage of Title IX.

The most famous athletic alumnus is Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Tom Gola, a key figure on the 1954 championship team who also played for the Philadelphia Warriors and New York Knicks. Other prominent basketball alumni include NBA players Lionel Simmons, the 1990 National Player of the Year, Rasual Butler, and Steve Smith. Baseball alumnus John Mabry enjoyed a lengthy career in Major League Baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals and others. In broadcasting, Fran Dunphy, a former La Salle University basketball player and longtime coach at Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania, is a notable figure. Olympic track athlete Hazel Clark, though not a La Salle graduate, trained under Explorers' coach James Temple.

Rivalries

La Salle maintains intense geographic rivalries within the Philadelphia Big 5, an informal basketball consortium comprising La Salle University, Saint Joseph's University, Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Villanova University. The most heated contest is with Saint Joseph's University, known as the "Holy War," which splits the city's Catholic community. Swimming and diving events are held at the Kirk Pool.
