Kontinental Hockey League. The Kontinental Hockey League is the premier professional ice hockey league in Eurasia, founded in 2008 as the successor to the Russian Superleague. Headquartered in Moscow, it is considered the strongest hockey league in Europe and the second-strongest in the world after the National Hockey League. Teams

The league's composition has fluctuated, currently standing at 23 teams for the 2023–24 KHL season, with a heavy concentration in Russia including historic clubs like CSKA Moscow, SKA Saint Petersburg, and Ak Bars Kazan. Notable non-Russian members have included Dinamo Minsk from Belarus, Barys Astana from Kazakhstan, and the now-defunct Kunlun Red Star based in Beijing, China. The league is divided into two conferences, the Bobrov Division and Tarasov Division in the West, and the Kharlamov Division and Chernyshev Division in the East, with teams based in major cities from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok.

Season structure

The regular season follows an 68-game schedule from early September to late February, where each team plays a balanced slate against conference and inter-conference opponents. The top eight teams from each conference then qualify for the Gagarin Cup playoffs, a four-round best-of-seven series tournament that culminates in April. The playoff format has evolved, notably adopting the IIHF point system for regular-season standings and implementing a strict seeding structure to determine matchups, with the conference champions advancing to the final series for the Gagarin Cup.

Champions

The Gagarin Cup has been awarded to seven different franchises, with CSKA Moscow holding the record with five championships (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023). Other multiple winners include Ak Bars Kazan (2009, 2010, 2018), Metallurg Magnitogorsk (2014, 2016, 2024), and SKA Saint Petersburg (2015, 2017). Legendary coaches like Zinetula Bilyaletdinov and Igor Nikitin, and star players such as Sergei Mozyakin, Vadim Shipachyov, and Ilya Kovalchuk have defined these championship runs, with the KHL All-Star Game often showcasing the league's top talent.

International competitions

While not under IIHF sanctioning, the league has actively participated in cross-border events, most notably the now-discontinued Champions Hockey League and the Spengler Cup. It previously organized the KHL vs NHL games in 2010 and 2011, featuring matches between clubs like SKA Saint Petersburg and the Colorado Avalanche. The league also collaborates with the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia for player selection for tournaments like the IIHF World Championship and the Winter Olympics, though its relationship with the International Ice Hockey Federation has been contentious regarding transfer agreements and tournament participation.
