History

The foundation was laid through the Khyber Medical University Act, passed by the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2007, during the administration of Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani. Its creation was part of a broader national reform in medical education aimed at decentralizing and improving standards, similar to initiatives by the Higher Education Commission (Pakistan). The university initially assumed control of several pre-existing institutions, including the historic Khyber Medical College, which was founded in 1954.
