History

The arena's construction was approved by the Kenyon College Board of Trustees in 1971, with groundbreaking occurring the following year. It opened in 1974, named in honor of a prominent benefactor family with deep ties to the institution. The venue was conceived to support the college's growing NCAA Division III athletic programs, particularly ice hockey, which had previously utilized off-campus facilities. A major renovation in 1998, funded by a capital campaign led by alumni, expanded concourse areas and upgraded mechanical systems. A second comprehensive renovation in 2016 focused on enhancing spectator amenities and improving accessibility standards in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The arena's design is characterized by a utilitarian, rectangular footprint with a barrel-vaulted roof structure, a common feature in mid-20th century collegiate athletic buildings. The primary ice sheet is NHL-regulation size, with dasher boards featuring integrated advertising for the North Coast Athletic Conference. Seating is primarily comprised of permanent bleachers, with a capacity of 3,200 for hockey, and includes a dedicated section for the Kenyon College student body known as the "Lords' Legion." Facilities include home and visitor team locker rooms, officials' quarters, a dedicated athletic training room, and a multipurpose community room that hosts events for the Gambier, Ohio village council. The 2016 renovation added a state-of-the-art video scoreboard and a new sound system from Bose Corporation.

Events and usage

As the home of the Kenyon Lords and Ladies, the arena hosts the full slate of home games for the men's and women's ice hockey and basketball teams within the North Coast Athletic Conference. Beyond collegiate sports, it is a frequent site for the Ohio High School Athletic Association state hockey and basketball tournaments. The venue also hosts large-scale campus events such as Convocation and Commencement ceremonies for Kenyon College, as well as concerts, lectures, and guest performances from organizations like the Cleveland Orchestra. Annually, it is transformed into a venue for the community's "Winter Carnival," featuring public skating sessions and youth hockey clinics run by the Columbus Blue Jackets outreach program.

Management and operations

Day-to-day operations and facility management are contracted to Aramark, a global hospitality and facilities services provider, under a long-term agreement with Kenyon College. The Kenyon College Athletic Department oversees all scheduling for varsity athletic events and has priority for the facility's use. Staffing includes a full-time director of arena operations, along with part-time event coordinators, security personnel provided by the Kenyon College Safety Department, and concessions staff. Major financial decisions, including capital improvements, are reviewed and approved by the Kenyon College Board of Trustees, often in consultation with the Office of the President.

The arena gained minor national recognition when it served as a filming location for several scenes in the 1994 sports drama film *The Last Season*, which fictionalized a NCAA Division III hockey championship. It was also featured in a 2010 episode of the Public Broadcasting Service documentary series *Colleges of the Midwest*, highlighting unique campus architectures. The venue's distinct exterior has been used as a backdrop in promotional photography for the J.Crew "Ludlow" clothing line, which has a historical connection to the style of Kenyon College.
