Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium

Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium is an outdoor track and field facility located on the campus of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Opened in 2001, it serves as the primary competition venue for the USC Trojans men's and women's track and field teams. The stadium is named for philanthropist Katherine Bogdanovich Loker, a notable USC alumna and donor.

History

The stadium was constructed to replace the aging Cromwell Field, which had been the home of USC Trojans track and field since 1914 under legendary coach Dean Cromwell. Funded by a generous donation from Katherine Bogdanovich Loker and her husband Donald Loker, the facility was built directly adjacent to the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Its opening coincided with a period of renewed success for the USC Trojans program under coaches like Ron Allice. The venue's creation was part of a broader modernization of athletic facilities at the University of Southern California, enhancing its ability to host major collegiate competitions.

Facilities and features

The stadium features a state-of-the-art, nine-lane Mondo Super X Performance track, a surface used at elite events like the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships. It includes dedicated areas for field events such as the pole vault, long jump, high jump, and throwing events. The grandstand provides permanent seating for 1,800 spectators, with additional space for temporary seating during large meets. The complex is integrated with the adjacent John McKay Center and other USC athletic facilities, providing athletes with direct access to training and sports medicine resources.

Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium has hosted numerous prestigious competitions, including the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2018. It is the annual site for the USC-UCLA rivalry dual meet, one of the most historic competitions in collegiate track and field. The stadium has also been selected to host the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics and several Mt. SAC Relays events. It regularly serves as a training and competition site for elite athletes preparing for events like the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Renovations and upgrades

Since its opening, the stadium has undergone several significant upgrades to maintain its status as a premier facility. Major renovations have included the installation of a new video scoreboard and enhanced stadium lighting to allow for night competitions and television broadcasts. The track surface was replaced in 2015 with the latest generation of Mondo technology. Further improvements have been made to athlete amenities, team areas, and public accessibility, ensuring the venue meets the standards for hosting events sanctioned by World Athletics and the NCAA.
