Katepalli R. Sreenivasan

Katepalli R. Sreenivasan is an Indian-American physicist and engineer renowned for his seminal contributions to the understanding of turbulence and fluid dynamics. His research, spanning experimental, theoretical, and computational approaches, has profoundly influenced the fields of statistical physics and engineering. He has held distinguished academic leadership positions at major institutions including New York University and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bangalore.

Early life and education

Born in Tumkur, Karnataka, he completed his early education in India before pursuing higher studies in engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. For his doctoral work, he moved to the University of Sydney in Australia, where he studied under the supervision of Robert Antonia and received a Ph.D. in 1975. His thesis work laid the groundwork for his lifelong investigation into the structure of turbulent shear flows.

Career and research

Sreenivasan began his academic career as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Newcastle and later at the University of Cambridge. He subsequently held faculty positions at Yale University and the University of Maryland, College Park, where he directed the Institute for Physical Science and Technology. In 1999, he joined New York University as a professor of physics and mathematics, later becoming the Dean of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. His research has elucidated fundamental aspects of turbulence, including the nature of intermittency, the validity of Kolmogorov's theory, and the application of multifractal formalisms. He has also made significant contributions to the study of convection, combustion, and complex fluids. From 2014 to 2022, he served as the founding Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, establishing it as a global hub for interdisciplinary research.

Sreenivasan has received numerous accolades for his scientific work. These include the Otto Laporte Award from the American Physical Society in 1998 and the prestigious Fluid Dynamics Prize from the American Institute of Physics in 2013. He was elected a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2010 and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Internationally, he was appointed a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour in 2014.
