Kamianske. Kamianske is a major industrial city in central Ukraine, situated on the banks of the Dnieper River within Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Historically known as Dniprodzerzhynsk during the Soviet era, it was renamed in 2016 as part of decommunization in Ukraine. The city's economy has long been dominated by heavy industry, particularly metallurgy, and it serves as a key administrative center for the surrounding Kamianske Raion.

History

The settlement was founded in 1750 as the village of Kamianske by Zaporozhian Cossacks and peasants fleeing serfdom. Its development accelerated in the late 19th century with the construction of the Catherine Railway and the establishment of the Dnieper Metallurgical Plant by a Belgian consortium, which attracted workers from across the Russian Empire. Following the October Revolution, the city, then renamed Dniprodzerzhynsk in 1936 in honor of Felix Dzerzhinsky, became a symbol of Soviet industrialization under the First Five-Year Plan. It suffered significant damage during World War II, including occupation by Nazi Germany and fierce battles during the Dnieper–Carpathian Offensive. The post-war period saw rapid reconstruction and expansion of its industrial base. In 2016, the Verkhovna Rada officially restored its historical name as part of a nationwide decommunization laws.

Geography

Kamianske is located in the southeastern part of Ukraine, approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the regional capital, Dnipro. The city lies on the right bank of the Dnieper River, adjacent to the Kamianske Reservoir, which was created by the Middle Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Plant. The terrain is characterized by a steppe landscape with ravines, and the area experiences a temperate continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Key geographical features include the Dnieper Upland and the Samara River, which flows into the Dnieper near the city.

Economy

The economy of Kamianske is heavily centered on metallurgy and chemical production. The Dnipro Metallurgical Plant, now part of the Interpipe group, remains one of the largest enterprises in Ukraine, producing steel, pig iron, and rolled products. The DniproAzot chemical plant is a major producer of ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers. Other significant industries include machine building, energy generation at the Kamianske Thermal Power Plant, and food processing. The city is a crucial transportation node, with connections via the Dnipro–Donetsk railway and the M04 highway linking it to Kyiv and Donetsk.

According to the latest estimates, Kamianske has a population of approximately 226,845 residents. The demographic composition is predominantly Ukrainian, with significant Russian and other minority communities, reflecting its history as an industrial migration hub. The city experienced substantial population growth during the Soviet period but has seen a gradual decline since the dissolution of the Soviet Union due to economic challenges and outward migration. Major religious affiliations include the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
