Joseph W. Ralston

Joseph W. Ralston is a retired General of the United States Air Force who served as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) from 2000 to 2003. His distinguished career spanned nearly four decades, including command roles during the Gulf War and leadership of major combatant commands. Following his military service, Ralston held significant positions in the private sector and served as a special envoy for the United States Department of State.

Early life and education

Joseph W. Ralston was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and later attended Western Kentucky University. He entered military service through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program, commissioning as a second lieutenant in 1965. Ralston furthered his education with a master's degree from the University of Southern California and is a distinguished graduate of the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base.

Military career

Ralston's operational career began as a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II pilot during the Vietnam War, where he flew over 150 combat missions. He later commanded the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base and served as Director of Operations for the United States Central Command during Operation Desert Storm. Promoted to General, he commanded the 12th Air Force and Air Combat Command before being appointed Commander of United States Air Forces in Europe. In 2000, President Bill Clinton nominated him as Commander of United States European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, a role in which he oversaw NATO operations including the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan.

Post-military career

After retiring from the United States Air Force in 2003, Ralston joined the private sector as Vice Chairman of The Cohen Group, a consulting firm founded by former United States Secretary of Defense William Cohen. In 2006, he was appointed as the State Department's Special Envoy for Countering the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), tasked with coordinating policy between Turkey, Iraq, and the United States. He has also served on the boards of several corporations and defense-related organizations, including the National Defense Industrial Association.

Awards and decorations

General Ralston's military honors include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, and the Defense Superior Service Medal. His combat decorations feature the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart. He has also been recognized with awards from allied nations, such as the French Legion of Honour and the Order of the Crown from the Netherlands.
