Early life and education

John Stanton was born on October 13, 1954, in Seattle, and grew up in the city's Laurelhurst neighborhood. He attended the Lakeside School before enrolling at the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Following his undergraduate studies, Stanton pursued a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, graduating in 1980. His early career included a brief stint in management consulting at McKinsey & Company in San Francisco.

Career

Stanton's telecommunications career began in 1982 when he joined McCaw Cellular Communications, then a small startup, as its chief financial officer under founder Craig McCaw. He was instrumental in the company's aggressive expansion, helping to navigate complex regulatory landscapes and acquire critical cellular licenses across the nation. After AT&T's landmark acquisition of McCaw in 1994, Stanton served as president and chief operating officer of the newly formed AT&T Wireless Services. In 1996, he left to found Western Wireless Corporation, which grew into a major rural wireless provider and later spun off its VoiceStream Wireless subsidiary, which was ultimately acquired to form part of T-Mobile US.

Following the sale of Western Wireless, Stanton founded the private investment firm Trilogy Equity Partners, focusing on wireless, media, and technology startups. He has served on the boards of numerous companies, including T-Mobile US, Columbia Sportswear, and Microsoft.
