John P. Jumper

John P. Jumper is a retired general of the United States Air Force who served as the 17th Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force from 2001 to 2005. Early life and education

John P. Jumper was born on June 4, 1945, in Paris, Texas. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University and is a distinguished graduate of the Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base. Military career

Commissioned in 1966, Jumper began his career as a forward air controller flying the O-2 Skymaster during the Vietnam War. Transitioning to fighters, he became an instructor pilot in the F-4 Phantom II and later commanded the 492d Fighter Squadron flying the F-15 Eagle. He served in key staff positions at the Pentagon, including on the Joint Staff and as the senior military assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force. His operational command posts included leading the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing at Nellis Air Force Base, the Ninth Air Force and United States Central Command Air Forces during the Gulf War, and United States Air Forces in Europe and Allied Air Forces Northern Europe. Prior to becoming Chief of Staff, he served as Commander of Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, where he championed the development of the Battlefield Air Operations kit for the C-130 Hercules and the MQ-1 Predator.

Post-military career

Following his retirement from the United States Air Force in 2005, Jumper joined the private sector. He served as the Chairman of the Board for USAA, a major financial services group for the military community. He also held positions on the boards of directors for Goodrich Corporation, MacAulay-Brown, Inc., and A-T Solutions, Inc.. In the academic realm, he has been involved with the Air Force Academy Foundation and has served as a trustee for the U.S. Air Force Museum Foundation. His post-service focus has included advocacy for veteran affairs and continued support for national defense technology initiatives.

General Jumper's personal military decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. His campaign and service medals encompass those for the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. General Jumper is married and has two children. He maintains an active interest in aviation history and is a supporter of the Air Force Historical Foundation.
