John Francis Kelly was born on May 11, 1950, in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. After initial service, Kelly utilized the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program to attend the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1976. He later pursued graduate studies, receiving a Master of Science in national security studies from Georgetown University and a second master's degree from the National War College.

Military career

Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1976, Kelly's early assignments included posts with the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. He served as a company commander during Operation Desert Storm and later held key staff positions, including legislative assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Kelly commanded the 1st Marine Division during the Iraq War and later served as the commander of Multi-National Force – West in Al Anbar Governorate. Promoted to general in 2012, he assumed command of the United States Southern Command in Doral, Florida, where he focused on issues like drug trafficking and regional security, frequently testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He retired from the Marine Corps in 2016 after over 45 years of service.

White House Chief of Staff

Appointed White House Chief of Staff in July 2017, succeeding Reince Priebus, Kelly was tasked with bringing discipline to the Executive Office. His tenure was characterized by attempts to control information flow and staff access to the Oval Office, leading to clashes with figures like Steve Bannon and Omarosa Manigault Newman. He was a central figure in the administration's controversial family separation policy and involved in high-profile departures, including the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the resignation of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. His influence reportedly waned over time, and he was replaced by Mick Mulvaney in January 2019.

Post-government career

Following his departure from the Trump administration, Kelly joined the board of directors for the Caliburn International parent company of facilities housing unaccompanied migrant children. He has served as a senior advisor to the Washington, D.C.-based Albright Stonebridge Group and is a distinguished senior fellow at the University of Maryland's Center for International and Security Studies. Kelly is married to Karen Hernest; the couple has four children. His personal life was marked by profound tragedy when his son, First Lieutenant Robert M. Kelly, was killed in action in Sangin in 2010 while serving with the United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. This loss deeply informed his public perspective on military service and sacrifice. Kelly is a Roman Catholic and maintains strong ties to the Boston area and the Marine Corps community.
