The institution was founded in 1886 by the Society of Jesus as St. Ignatius College, initially located on Cleveland's West Side in the Ohio City neighborhood. In 1890, the college moved to its present location in what would become University Heights, Ohio. The name was changed to John Carroll University in 1923, coinciding with its evolution into a more comprehensive institution. Key figures in its development include longtime president the Very Reverend William J. Murphy, S.J., who oversaw significant expansion in the mid-20th century. The university became coeducational in 1968, admitting its first full-time undergraduate women.
