Joe Schoen

Joe Schoen is an American football executive who serves as the general manager of the New York Giants of the National Football League. He began his front office career with the Carolina Panthers before holding prominent roles with the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. Schoen was hired by the Giants in 2022, tasked with leading a rebuild of the historic franchise.

Early life and education

Born in Elma, New York, Schoen grew up in the Western New York region. He attended Iroquois High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete. For his collegiate education, he attended DePauw University, a liberal arts college in Greencastle, Indiana. At DePauw, he played wide receiver for the Tigers football team while earning a degree in communication studies.

Playing career

Schoen's playing career was entirely at the collegiate level with the DePauw Tigers. He was a member of the football program during an era of success within the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. While not pursuing a professional playing career, his experience on the field provided a foundational understanding of the game. This background would later inform his evaluations and philosophy during his extensive front office career in the NFL.

Coaching career

Following his graduation from DePauw University, Schoen briefly entered the coaching profession. He served as a graduate assistant for the football program at the University at Buffalo. In this role, he worked under head coach Jim Hofher, assisting with various administrative and on-field duties for the Bulls. This short stint in coaching provided practical experience before he transitioned to the personnel side of professional football.

General manager career

Schoen's front office career began in 2001 as a scouting assistant with the Carolina Panthers, working under general manager Marty Hurney. He spent six seasons with the Panthers, rising to the role of area scout. In 2008, he joined the Miami Dolphins as a national scout, eventually being promoted to director of player personnel by general manager Dennis Hickey. His work in Miami caught the attention of Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane, who hired him as assistant general manager in 2018. In Buffalo, Schoen played a key role in building a roster that won the AFC East division. His success with the Bills led to his hiring as general manager of the New York Giants in January 2022, replacing Dave Gettleman. In his first season, Schoen hired head coach Brian Daboll and oversaw a roster that earned a playoff berth, defeating the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Personal life

Schoen is married and has children. He maintains a relatively private life outside of his demanding role with the New York Giants.
