Jason Kidd is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Renowned as one of the greatest point guards in league history, his 19-year playing career was defined by elite playmaking, tenacious defense, and exceptional basketball intelligence. Early life and college career

Born in San Francisco and raised in Oakland, California, Kidd attended St. Joseph Notre Dame High School where he led his team to a state championship. His exceptional high school career earned him national recognition and a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley. Playing for the California Golden Bears under coach Lou Campanelli, Kidd was a two-time First-team All-Pac-10 selection and a consensus First-team All-American in 1994. He led the NCAA Tournament in assists during his sophomore season before declaring for the 1994 NBA draft.

NBA playing career

Selected second overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1994, Kidd shared the NBA Rookie of the Year Award with Grant Hill. He was traded to the Phoenix Suns in 1996, where he earned three NBA All-Star selections and led the league in assists. A subsequent trade sent him to the New Jersey Nets in 2001, where he transformed the franchise, leading them to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003 alongside Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson. Kidd returned to the Mavericks in 2008, where he finally won an NBA championship in 2011, providing veteran leadership to a team featuring Dirk Nowitzki and coached by Rick Carlisle. He finished his playing career with the New York Knicks in 2013, ranking second all-time in career assists and steals behind only John Stockton.

Coaching career

Immediately after retiring, Kidd was hired as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets in 2013. After one season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he coached from 2014 to 2018, developing young stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. Following a stint as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under Frank Vogel, during which the team won the 2020 championship, Kidd was named head coach of the Dallas Mavericks in 2021. He has since guided the team, led by Luka Dončić, to the Western Conference Finals.
