Its name evolved from Medieval Latin *Icciacum*, later becoming *Issy*, with *les Moulineaux* (referring to windmills) added in the 19th century. The Château d'Issy, demolished after the French Revolution, was a significant residence. The Fort d'Issy played a crucial role during the Paris Commune of 1871, witnessing intense fighting between the Communards and the regular French Army under Adolphe Thiers.
