Interstate 215 (California) is a major north–south auxiliary Interstate Highway in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. It serves as a critical bypass and commuter route, connecting the cities of Murrieta, Temecula, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Moreno Valley. The freeway is officially designated as the Barstow Freeway along its northern segment and the Moreno Valley Freeway in the south, providing a vital transportation link between Interstate 15 in southwestern Riverside County and the Interstate 15/Interstate 215 interchange in Devore.

Route description

Traveling north from its southern terminus at Interstate 15 in Murrieta, Interstate 215 passes through the Temecula Valley before entering the City of Riverside. It skirts the eastern edge of March Air Reserve Base and serves the rapidly growing city of Moreno Valley. The route then traverses the northern reaches of Riverside and enters San Bernardino County, where it bisects the cities of San Bernardino and Colton. The freeway provides direct access to key facilities including the Riverside University Health System Medical Center, San Bernardino International Airport, and California State University, San Bernardino. Its northern terminus is at the complex Interstate 15/Interstate 215 interchange in the Cajon Pass community of Devore.

History

The routing of Interstate 215 was originally designated as part of U.S. Route 395 and later U.S. Route 91 before the establishment of the Interstate Highway System. Its current designation was assigned in 1964 as part of a renumbering plan for auxiliary routes in California. Significant construction projects have widened the freeway over decades to accommodate the explosive population growth in the Inland Empire. A major milestone was the completion of the Moreno Valley Freeway segment in the early 1990s, which created a continuous high-speed route south of Riverside. Recent projects managed by the California Department of Transportation have focused on adding HOV lanes and improving interchanges, such as the massive overhaul of the junction with Interstate 10 in Colton.
