Inter Milan. Officially known as Football Club Internazionale Milano, it is an Italian professional football club based in Milan. Founded in 1908 by a breakaway group from the Milan Cricket and Football Club, the club has become one of the most successful and storied institutions in Italian football and European football. Nicknamed I Nerazzurri for its distinctive black and blue stripes, the club has spent its entire history in the top flight of Serie A, a record it shares only with local rivals A.C. Milan.

History

The club was established on 9 March 1908 by a group of Italians and Swiss who wanted a club that would welcome foreign players, in contrast to the then-prevalent xenophobia in Italian football, leading to a split from Milan Cricket and Football Club. The early years saw the club win its first Scudetto in 1910 under the presidency of Giovanni Paramithiotti. A dominant period, known as the Grande Inter era, arrived in the 1960s under the visionary management of Helenio Herrera, who implemented the defensive catenaccio system; this team, featuring legends like Giacinto Facchetti and Sandro Mazzola, won three Serie A titles, two consecutive European Cups in 1964 and 1965, and two Intercontinental Cups. The late 20th century was marked by domestic success, including a record-equalling 13th Scudetto in 1989 under Giovanni Trapattoni with stars like Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann. The modern era, particularly under the ownership of Massimo Moratti, culminated in an unprecedented treble in 2010 under manager José Mourinho, winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League, completing a historic quintuple that also included the Supercoppa Italiana and FIFA Club World Cup.

Stadium

The club has played its home matches at the iconic San Siro stadium, officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, since its move there in 1947. The stadium, which it shares with rivals A.C. Milan, is located in the San Siro district of Milan and is one of the most famous football venues in the world, having hosted matches during the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League final. With a current capacity of 75,817, it is known for its distinct cylindrical towers and intense atmosphere, particularly during the Derby della Madonnina. In 2022, the club announced plans, in partnership with A.C. Milan, to construct a new, modern stadium in the Rozzano area, aiming to replace the aging San Siro with a state-of-the-art facility.

The Grande Inter side was built around the Italian core of Giacinto Facchetti and Sandro Mazzola, complemented by the Spanish genius of Luis Suárez Miramontes. The club's primary and most intense rivalry is with city neighbours A.C. Milan, a contest known as the Derby della Madonnina, one of the most famous derbies in world football, with matches often decisive in the Serie A title race. The club's modern history has been significantly shaped by the Moratti family, with Massimo Moratti serving as president from 1995 to 2013 and overseeing the treble-winning season. In 2016, a majority stake was acquired by the Chinese retail conglomerate Suning Holdings Group, with Steven Zhang becoming club president. On the sporting side, the club has been led by some of football's most renowned managers, including Helenio Herrera, Giovanni Trapattoni, José Mourinho, and Antonio Conte, who ended an 11-year wait for a Serie A title in 2021. The current sporting project is directed by CEO Giuseppe Marotta and head coach Simone Inzaghi, who have continued the club's tradition of success.
