History

The estate was established in 1879 by Finnish-American sea captain and fur trader Gustave Niebaum, who used his fortune from the Alaska Commercial Company to pursue his passion for fine wine. Niebaum imported superior Vitis vinifera cuttings from Europe and implemented rigorous quality standards, with his early vintages winning medals at international competitions like the 1900 Paris Exposition. Following Niebaum's death, the property was managed by his widow, Susan Niebaum, and later his grandnephew, John Daniel Jr., who maintained its elite reputation until the estate's sale in 1964. A period of corporate ownership by Heublein led to the dilution of the brand, but the property's renaissance began in 1975 when filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola purchased a portion of the historic estate, culminating in his acquisition of the iconic Château and the revered Inglenook name in 2011, reuniting the original property.

Vineyards and terroir

The estate encompasses over 1,700 acres at the western foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, with approximately 235 acres under vine. The portfolio includes the estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet Franc-dominant blend named Edizione Pennino, and a limited-production Syrah.
