IFEMA. The Institución Ferial de Madrid (Madrid Trade Fair Institution) is a major trade fair and congress organizer and venue operator based in the Spanish capital. Its primary complex, known as Feria de Madrid, is located in the Barajas district and is one of the largest and most modern exhibition centers in Europe. IFEMA hosts a diverse portfolio of leading international trade shows, public events, and congresses, serving as a critical hub for business, innovation, and culture.

History

The institution was founded in 1980 by the City Council of Madrid, the Regional Government of Madrid, and the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of Madrid to centralize and professionalize the city's trade fair activity. Its first major project was the development of the modern Feria de Madrid grounds in the northeastern part of the city, near the expanding Barajas Airport. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, IFEMA significantly grew its event calendar, establishing flagship fairs like Fitur and ARCOmadrid. Major expansions of the physical venue coincided with Madrid's hosting of large international events, including the 1992 Summer Olympics, and continued into the 21st century with projects like the Madrid Arena pavilion and the Caja Mágica tennis complex, the latter used during the Mutua Madrid Open.

Facilities

The Feria de Madrid complex encompasses over 200,000 square meters of indoor exhibition space across multiple interconnected pavilions, including the massive Norte and Sur halls. The venue features the state-of-the-art Madrid Convention Centre (Centro de Convenciones), numerous meeting rooms, auditoriums, and extensive outdoor areas. Key ancillary facilities include the Madrid Arena for large-scale concerts and sporting events, and the Caja Mágica, a premier tennis stadium designed by the architect Dominique Perrault.
