Post-war, it was designated London's official airport until the reopening of Heathrow Airport, operating commercial services under the name Bournemouth Airport. The parish was historically part of the hundred of Holdenhurst in Hampshire before the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Dorset. Archaeological evidence, including finds from the Bronze Age and Roman periods, indicates much earlier settlement in the locality.
