History

The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape people before European settlement. It was named for the Holmdel family, early settlers of Dutch descent, with the first land purchases recorded in the 17th century. The township was formed from portions of Raritan Township (now Hazlet) on February 23, 1857. Its 20th-century history is dominated by the establishment of the Bell Labs research facility in the 1960s, designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen. It was here that Arno Penzias and Robert Woodrow Wilson, using the Holmdel Horn Antenna, detected the cosmic microwave background in 1964, a discovery for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978. The Battle of Monmouth occurred nearby, and historic sites like the Holmdel Cemetery and the Longstreet Farm preserve elements of its agricultural past.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 46.20 square kilometers, with minimal water coverage. It borders Middletown Township and Red Bank to the north, Hazlet and Aberdeen Township to the east, Marlboro Township to the south, and Colts Neck Township to the west. The topography includes rolling hills and several waterways, such as Ramanessin Brook and Pleasant Valley Run, which flow through the Holmdel Park and the Holmdel Township Arboretum.
