Hoeryong. Hoeryong is a city in North Hamgyong Province, situated in the northern reaches of North Korea near the border with the People's Republic of China. The city is positioned on the south bank of the Tumen River, which forms part of the international boundary. Historically significant, it is known as the birthplace of Kim Jong-suk, the first wife of Kim Il-sung and mother of Kim Jong-il.

History

The area around the city has long been part of the historical region of Hamgyong Province. During the Joseon Dynasty, it served as an important administrative and military center. In the late 19th century, following the Treaty of Ganghwa, the region saw increased interaction and tension along the border. In the 20th century, Hoeryong was incorporated into Japanese Korea and experienced development under colonial rule. Following the division of Korea and the establishment of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the city became part of the new administrative structure. It gained particular prominence within North Korean ideology due to its connection with Kim Jong-suk, with several monuments and sites dedicated to her legacy. Hoeryong is located in the far northeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, within the mountainous terrain of North Hamgyong Province. The city lies directly on the southern bank of the Tumen River, which separates it from Jilin Province in China. The city is home to the Kim Jong-suk Higher Middle School, a prestigious institution named in her honor. Annual events and ceremonies are held at these sites, reinforcing state ideology. The region also has distinct local folk traditions influenced by its northern location and proximity to Manchuria.

The most famous individual from the city is Kim Jong-suk, a revolutionary figure celebrated as the "Mother of Korea" in state propaganda.
