Heppenheim. Heppenheim is a town in the Bergstraße district of Hesse, Germany, situated on the Bergstraße route along the western edge of the Odenwald forest. Known as the gateway to the Bergstraße region, it lies approximately 20 kilometers south of Darmstadt and 50 kilometers north of Heidelberg. The town is administratively part of the Darmstadt Government Region and is characterized by its well-preserved medieval old town centered around a striking market square.

History

The first documented mention of Heppenheim dates to 755 AD in a charter of the Lorsch Abbey, a powerful imperial abbey during the Carolingian Empire. For centuries, the town was an important administrative center of the Electorate of Mainz. The Starkenburg castle, constructed in the 11th century, served as a key fortress for the Archbishopric of Mainz to secure its territories. Heppenheim gained town rights in the early 14th century and later became the seat of the Starkenburg province within the Grand Duchy of Hesse. A significant political event was the Heppenheim Assembly of 1847, where liberal politicians like Heinrich von Gagern met, a precursor to the Frankfurt Parliament of 1848. The town largely escaped major destruction during World War II, preserving its historic character.
