He pursued his higher education at Saint Louis University, where he was an active member of the Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity. His academic career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, leading him to enlist in the United States Army Air Forces. Before his service, he also attended the University of Missouri, furthering his foundational education in business and leadership principles that would later define his professional life.

Military service

During World War II, Ziegemeier served as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces. He was assigned to the Eighth Air Force and flew B-17 Flying Fortress bombers on numerous combat missions over Germany and occupied Europe. His distinguished service earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with multiple oak leaf clusters. Following the war, he continued his service in the United States Air Force Reserve, eventually retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Ziegemeier began his business career at the General American Life Insurance Company in St. Louis shortly after the war. He steadily advanced within the company, holding various executive positions in sales, marketing, and regional management. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Old Warson Country Club in Ladue, Missouri. Henry J. Ziegemeier passed away in 2008 in St. Louis, Missouri, and was interred at Calvary Cemetery.
