Henrik Lundqvist is a Swedish former professional ice hockey goaltender who played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers and one season for the Washington Capitals. Nicknamed "The King" for his dominance and composure, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest goaltenders of his generation and a franchise icon for the Rangers. His career is distinguished by remarkable consistency, numerous individual awards, and leading Sweden to an Olympic gold medal.

Early life and junior career

Born in Åre, Sweden, he grew up playing hockey with his twin brother, Joel Lundqvist, who also became a professional player. He began his organized hockey career with Järpens IF before joining the prestigious youth system of Frölunda HC in Gothenburg. Competing initially as a forward, he switched to goaltender at age eight, inspired by watching Pelle Lindbergh and other Swedish netminders. He progressed through the Frölunda ranks, winning a J20 SuperElit championship and earning recognition as the league's top goaltender, which set the stage for his professional debut in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).

Professional career

He made his SHL debut with Frölunda HC during the 2000–01 season, quickly establishing himself as the team's starter. His stellar play in Sweden, including leading Frölunda to the Le Mat Trophy as SHL champions in 2003 and 2005, earned him the Honken Trophy as the league's best goaltender multiple times. Selected 205th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, he joined the team for the 2005–06 NHL season and immediately won the starting role, capturing the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender in his first year. He backstopped the Rangers to the Stanley Cup playoffs in 11 of his first 12 seasons, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014, and holds virtually every significant franchise goaltending record. After 15 seasons with New York, he was bought out in 2020 and played his final NHL season with the Washington Capitals before a heart condition forced his retirement in 2021.

International play

A stalwart for the Swedish national team, he enjoyed immense success on the international stage. He represented Sweden at multiple IIHF World Championship tournaments, winning a silver medal in 2004. His crowning achievement came at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where he posted a .907 save percentage and led Sweden to the gold medal. He also competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and was a key player for Sweden in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and several IIHF World Junior Championship tournaments earlier in his career.

An accomplished guitarist, he has performed musically at various charity events and with the band The Tiny. He is heavily involved in philanthropy through the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation, which supports health and education initiatives for children in New York, Sweden, and globally.
