History

The origins of a centralized Greek military command date to the Greek War of Independence and the provisional governments of the period. The modern General Staff system evolved significantly following the Balkan Wars and World War I, with the Hellenic Army General Staff being formally established. A major reorganization occurred after the Greek Civil War and the country's accession to NATO, aligning structures with allied standards. Responsibilities

Its primary responsibility is the defense of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greece from external threats. This entails the formulation of strategic defense plans, the operational command of all military forces, and the management of crises. The General Staff coordinates the country's contributions to NATO and the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy, including participation in operations such as Active Endeavour and EUNAVFOR MED. It also plays a key role in national security policy advising, overseeing major procurement programs like the F-16 Fighting Falcon and frigate acquisitions, and directing domestic operations such as disaster response in coordination with the Hellenic Fire Service and Hellenic Police.

Leadership

The Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff is appointed by the Government of Greece upon the recommendation of the Minister for National Defence. The position rotates among the most senior officers of the three services. Notable former Chiefs include General Konstantinos Floros and Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, the latter of whom later served as Minister for National Defence. The Chief is assisted by a Vice Chief and the chiefs of the three service branches, forming the core of the nation's military leadership, and serves as the principal military advisor to the Prime Minister and the Government of Greece.

Component Commands

The operational forces are commanded through the three service headquarters, which execute the directives of the General Staff.
