Harold Page Smith was a senior officer in the United States Navy whose career spanned both World War I and World War II. He commanded major battleships and cruiser divisions in the Pacific Theater, playing a significant role in several key naval campaigns. Smith retired with the rank of vice admiral after over three decades of service, later contributing to the United States Atomic Energy Commission.

Early life and education

Harold Page Smith was born in 1893 in New York City. He received his early education in the state of New York before gaining an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He graduated and was commissioned as an ensign in 1915, joining the ranks of the United States Navy during a period of significant technological transition from coal to oil-powered fleets. His initial assignments provided foundational experience in the evolving Atlantic Fleet.

Military career

Smith's early service included duty aboard the battleship USS ''Utah'' during World War I. In the interwar period, he held various sea and shore posts, including instruction at the Naval War College in Newport. At the outbreak of World War II, he commanded the battleship USS ''New Mexico'', leading her through early wartime patrols. Promoted to rear admiral, he later commanded Cruiser Division 9 during operations in the Aleutian Islands Campaign.

In his civilian career, he served as a security advisor to the United States Atomic Energy Commission, contributing to the nation's early nuclear security efforts. Harold Page Smith died in 1971 and was interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
