Situated on the north bank of the River Thames, it is a major commercial and transport hub, historically known for its industry and riverside pubs. The area is defined by significant infrastructure like Hammersmith Bridge and is a centre for media, commerce, and entertainment.

History

The area's name, first recorded in 1294, likely derives from a riverside Anglo-Saxon settlement. For centuries, it remained a small village within the Parish of Fulham, known for its market gardens and as a coaching stop on the route to Hounslow and the west. The 19th century brought transformative development with the arrival of the Metropolitan District Railway and the construction of the first Hammersmith Bridge in 1827, spurring suburban growth. Industrial expansion followed, with notable firms like the Kelvinator Company and the Osram lamp works establishing major factories. During The Blitz, the area suffered significant bomb damage. Post-war redevelopment included the construction of the Hammersmith Flyover and the modern Hammersmith Broadway.

Geography

Hammersmith is positioned in a broad meander of the River Thames, opposite the district of Barnes in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Its northern parts border Shepherd's Bush and Brook Green. The defining waterway is the River Thames, with the Stamford Brook flowing underground through parts of the area. Key open spaces include Furnivall Gardens along the riverfront and the larger Ravenscourt Park to the north. The area's topography is generally flat, typical of the Thames Basin.

Economy

Hammersmith is a major commercial centre for West London, with a significant concentration of corporate offices, particularly in the Hammersmith Broadway area. It is a European headquarters for many global companies, including major players in the media sector such as The Walt Disney Company and Lionsgate. The area also hosts the headquarters of the BBC's Studios division and other media operations. Historically industrial, the economy has shifted towards the service sector, with retail anchored by the Kings Mall shopping centre and the Lyric Square redevelopment.

Transport

The district is a critical transport interchange. It is served by two London Underground stations: Hammersmith on the District and Piccadilly lines, and Hammersmith on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. Numerous London Buses routes converge at the large Hammersmith Bus Station. Major road arteries include the A4 Great West Road, which is carried over local roads by the Hammersmith Flyover, and the A315 through Hammersmith Bridge.

The area boasts several notable cultural institutions, most famously the Lyric Hammersmith theatre, a major producing house. The Eventim Apollo (formerly the Hammersmith Odeon) is a legendary live music venue that has hosted acts from The Beatles to Queen. Riverside landmarks include the cast-iron Hammersmith Bridge and the London Corinthian Sailing Club. Annual events include the Boat Race, which passes along the Thames frontage, and the Hammersmith & Fulham Arts Festival. The area is also known for its historic pubs like The Dove.

Education

Most prominent is the Imperial College campus at Hammersmith Hospital, a world-leading centre for medical research and teaching. Other significant schools include the Godolphin and Latymer School, an independent day school for girls, and the London Oratory School, a voluntary-aided Roman Catholic school for boys.
