The area's history includes millennia of inhabitation by the Mi'kmaq people. British settlement was formally established in 1749 under the direction of Edward Cornwallis, leading to the founding of the town and the subsequent construction of the Halifax Citadel fortress. The settlement played a crucial role in the French and Indian War, the American Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812, becoming a primary base for the Royal Navy's North America and West Indies Station. The community was devastated by the Halifax Explosion of 1917, one of history's largest pre-atomic artificial explosions, resulting from a collision in The Narrows between the SS *Mont-Blanc* and the SS *Imo*. During World War II, the port was a critical convoy assembly point for the Battle of the Atlantic, guarded by CFB Halifax and the Royal Canadian Navy.
