Its founding was part of a broader national restructuring of the French academic landscape aimed at enhancing global competitiveness and research excellence.

History and establishment

The establishment of HESAM Université was formalized in 2010 following the implementation of the French law on the freedoms and responsibilities of universities, known as the LRU Law. This legislative push, championed by then-Minister of Higher Education Valérie Pécresse, aimed to create larger, more competitive academic clusters. The initial consortium was built around the historic École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (CNAM), institutions with deep roots in the French Third Republic and the Age of Enlightenment. A significant evolution occurred in 2015 when, under the impetus of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, it merged with another ComUE, HESAM, which included the renowned École du Louvre and the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle. This merger solidified its unique identity at the intersection of social sciences, heritage, design, and technology.

Member institutions and structure

HESAM Université comprises a diverse alliance of over fifteen member institutions, each maintaining its legal autonomy and distinctive mission. Core founding members include the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, a world leader in advanced social science research, and the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers, known for its lifelong learning programs and technical museum. Other prominent members are the École du Louvre, specializing in art history and museology, the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI-Les Ateliers), a top school for industrial design, and the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (Arts et Métiers ParisTech), a major engineering institute.
