Guðni Th. Jóhannesson is the current President of Iceland, having assumed the office in August 2016 following a decisive electoral victory. Early life and education

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was born in Reykjavík and spent part of his childhood in the Westfjords region. His father, Jóhannesson, was a journalist and sports editor for the Morgunblaðið newspaper. He attended Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík before pursuing higher education internationally. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from the University of Warwick in England, followed by a cand.mag. degree from the University of Iceland. He later completed an Master of Studies at the University of Oxford and returned to the University of Iceland to obtain a PhD in history.

Academic career

Prior to his presidency, Jóhannesson was a prominent historian and university professor. He taught at the University of Iceland, the University of Bifröst, and Reykjavík University. His scholarly focus was on contemporary Icelandic history, with notable works including a comprehensive history of Íslandsbanki and a critically acclaimed biography of former Prime Minister Gunnar Thoroddsen. He also authored detailed books on the Cod Wars and the 2008–2011 Icelandic financial crisis, establishing himself as a leading authority on the nation's modern political and economic affairs. Presidency

Jóhannesson announced his candidacy for the 2016 Icelandic presidential election as a political independent, capitalizing on his high public profile as a historian and media personality. He won the election with a significant majority, succeeding Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. As president, a largely ceremonial role under the Constitution of Iceland, he has emphasized national cohesion and civic engagement. He played a visible, reassuring role during the COVID-19 pandemic in Iceland, regularly communicating with citizens. In 2020, he was re-elected unopposed. An avid football fan, he is a known supporter of the Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur club and the Iceland national football team. He has translated several works of fiction, including novels by Stephen King, into Icelandic. He is also a member of the Icelandic Writers' Union and maintains interests in literature and music.
