History

Following the fall of Gaya, it was incorporated into the Silla kingdom and later administered under the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. In the modern era, it was the site of significant operations during the Korean War, particularly associated with the Hungnam evacuation. The discovery of extensive dinosaur footprints and fossils in the 1990s established its global paleontological significance.

Geography

Goseong is situated on the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, bordered by the city of Jinju to the north and Sacheon to the east. Its topography features the lower reaches of the Deokcheon River and a rugged coastline along the South Sea, which includes numerous bays and islands such as Maemuldo. The myeon include Daegeocho-myeon, Dong-myeon, Gaecheon-myeon, Gunnae-myeon, Hail-myeon, Hyeonnae-myeon, Jijwa-myeon, Maam-myeon, Sangri-myeon, Seohae-myeon, Sangni-myeon, Songji-myeon, and Yeomchi-myeon. Each division encompasses a mix of coastal fishing villages, agricultural communities, and mountainous areas.
