The modern city was founded by the Glendale Land Company and officially incorporated on February 16, 1906. Significant growth occurred with the arrival of the Pacific Electric Railway and the expansion of the film industry into nearby Hollywood, attracting studios like Walt Disney Animation Studios and DreamWorks Animation. The mid-20th century saw the development of major employers such as Nestlé and the opening of the Glendale Galleria.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city encompasses a total area of approximately 30.6 square miles, with land covering 30.5 square miles and water comprising 0.1 square miles. It is bordered by the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Atwater Village and Echo Park to the west, Burbank to the north, and La Cañada Flintridge to the northeast. The Verdugo Mountains run through the northern part of the city, while the San Gabriel Mountains are visible to the north. Major thoroughfares include the Ventura Freeway and the Glendale Freeway.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 196,543, making it the fourth-largest city in Los Angeles County. The city is noted for its ethnic diversity, with significant communities of Armenian Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, and Asian Americans. A large portion of the population is foreign-born, contributing to a multilingual environment where languages such as Armenian, Spanish, and Korean are widely spoken.
