Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. The Gerald Ratner Athletics Center is a major athletic and recreational facility located on the campus of the University of Chicago in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Opened in 2003, it serves as the primary hub for the university's NCAA Division III varsity athletics, intramural sports, and student fitness programs. The center is named for alumnus and donor Gerald Ratner, whose gift was instrumental in its construction, and was designed by the renowned architect César Pelli.

History

The facility was conceived in the late 1990s as part of a broader initiative by the University of Chicago to modernize its athletic infrastructure and bolster student life. A significant donation from alumnus Gerald Ratner, a member of the University of Chicago class of 1937 and co-founder of the Crown-Ratner real estate development firm, provided the cornerstone funding for the project. Construction began in 2001, and the building was officially dedicated in the autumn of 2003, replacing the aging Henry Crown Field House as the campus's premier indoor athletic venue. The project represented one of the largest capital investments in student facilities at the University of Chicago at the time, reflecting the administration's commitment under President Don Michael Randel to enhancing the collegiate experience.

Facilities

The center encompasses approximately 150,000 square feet and houses a wide array of sports and fitness amenities. Its signature feature is a 200-meter hydraulic-banked track, which is one of the fastest indoor tracks in the Midwest. The complex also includes the Myers-McLoraine Pool, a 50-meter by 25-yard natatorium that hosts varsity swimming and diving competitions. Additional facilities comprise four multi-purpose courts for basketball and volleyball, a comprehensive fitness center with cardio and weight training equipment, dedicated spaces for martial arts and dance, and several squash courts. The building also contains locker rooms, athletic training areas, and offices for the Department of Athletics and Recreation.

Athletics and programs

The center is the home venue for the Chicago Maroons, the university's varsity athletic teams that compete in the University Athletic Association and the NCAA Division III. It hosts indoor track and field meets, swimming and diving dual meets, and basketball games. Beyond varsity sports, the facility is central to the university's extensive intramural and club sports programs, which include leagues for soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee. The Department of Athletics and Recreation also operates group fitness classes, personal training, and instructional programs open to all students, faculty, and staff, supporting the wellness initiatives of the University of Chicago.

Designed by the acclaimed firm Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, led by César Pelli, the structure is noted for its sleek, modern aesthetic and functional layout. The exterior features extensive use of glass, brick, and metal panels, creating a transparent and inviting facade that connects the building visually to the surrounding campus. A prominent, curved roofline distinguishes the building's profile. The interior is organized to maximize natural light, with the track and pool areas positioned under soaring, vaulted ceilings. The design strategically separates spectator circulation from athlete and participant traffic, ensuring efficient operation during large events like the University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Notable events

The venue has hosted numerous significant athletic and academic events since its opening. It is the regular site for the University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships, bringing together teams from prestigious institutions like Washington University in St. Louis, Emory University, and Carnegie Mellon University. The pool has been selected for the UAA Swimming and Diving Championships on multiple occasions. Beyond collegiate competition, the center has hosted community events, high school championship meets for the Illinois High School Association, and large-scale university gatherings such as Orientation Week activities and the annual University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt.
