General Sir Peter de la Billière

General Sir Peter de la Billière is a retired senior officer of the British Army renowned for his extensive service in special forces and for commanding British forces during the Gulf War. His career spanned four decades, encompassing conflicts from the Aden Emergency to the Falklands War, and he became a leading authority on unconventional warfare. Following his military service, he authored several books on his experiences and remained a prominent commentator on defence matters.

Early life and education

Born in Folkestone, Kent, he was educated at Wellesley House School in Broadstairs and later at Harrow School. His early life was marked by a desire for adventure, which led him to decline a place at the University of Oxford in favor of enlisting in the British Army. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the King's Shropshire Light Infantry in 1952.

Military career

His early postings included service with the King's African Rifles in Kenya during the Mau Mau Uprising. He subsequently volunteered for the Special Air Service (SAS), joining 22 SAS Regiment and seeing action in the Aden Emergency and the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. He commanded D Squadron, 22 SAS during the Dhofar Rebellion in Oman, where his leadership earned him the Military Cross. He later served as the Director Special Forces during the Falklands War, coordinating the activities of the SAS and the Special Boat Service. Promoted to general officer rank, he held commands including British Forces Cyprus and the British Army of the Rhine.

Gulf War command

In 1990, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of British Forces Gulf and Deputy Commander of the Coalition Forces under American General Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. during the Gulf War. Operating from headquarters in Riyadh, he played a crucial role in planning Operation Desert Storm and integrating United Kingdom Special Forces into the coalition campaign. His leadership was instrumental in the rapid liberation of Kuwait and he was praised for fostering effective relations with the United States Central Command.

Later life and honours

After retiring from the British Army in 1992, he published a bestselling account of the conflict, Storm Command. He has since written further memoirs and histories, including Looking for Trouble and a biography of T. E. Lawrence. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honours, including being appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He has also served as a non-executive director for several companies and as a trustee for military charities.

Personal life

He married in 1960 and has two children. A dedicated fly fisherman and painter, he has maintained a relatively private life since retirement. He has been involved with organisations such as the Special Air Service Association and the Royal United Services Institute, often providing insights on contemporary security issues. His legacy is firmly associated with the evolution of the United Kingdom Special Forces and modern joint coalition warfare.
