History

The idea for the foundation was conceived in 1968 by Joan Miró and his close friend, the art collector Joan Prats. Miró wanted to create a new institution in his native city of Barcelona that would encourage young artists and engage the public with contemporary art, distinct from traditional museums. The project gained crucial support from the Barcelona City Council, which donated the land on Parc de Montjuïc, and the first board was chaired by Joan Ainaud de Lasarte. The building, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, a key figure of the Grupo de Artistas y Técnicos Españoles para el Progreso de la Arquitectura Contemporánea, opened to the public on June 10, 1975. A major expansion, known as the new wing, was completed in 1988 to designs by Sert's former collaborator, Jaume Freixa.

Building and architecture

The main building is a seminal work of Modernist architecture in Catalonia, designed by Josep Lluís Sert who had previously collaborated with Le Corbusier. Sert's design emphasizes Mediterranean architectural principles, featuring white surfaces, vaulted ceilings, and a rational layout organized around a central patio, allowing for abundant natural light. The structure is integrated into the landscape of Parc de Montjuïc, offering panoramic views of Barcelona. The 1988 extension by Jaume Freixa added significant space for the library, auditorium, and additional galleries, while harmonizing with Sert's original aesthetic. The building itself is considered a key exhibit, reflecting the dialogue between art and architecture.

Collection

The core of the collection comprises over 14,000 items donated by Joan Miró himself, including 217 paintings, 178 sculptures, 9 textiles, and nearly all of his prints. This provides a comprehensive overview of his career, from early works like Portrait of a Young Girl to later monumental sculptures such as Woman and Bird. The foundation also holds works by other major 20th and 21st-century artists, including pieces by Alexander Calder, Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, and Rebecca Horn. The library and archive contain an extensive collection of documents, photographs, and rare books related to Surrealism and modern art.

Exhibitions and activities

Beyond displaying its permanent collection, the foundation is an active exhibition venue for modern and contemporary art. It has organized major retrospectives for artists like Yayoi Kusama, Francis Bacon, and Louise Bourgeois, as well as thematic shows exploring movements such as Dada and Arte Povera. Its public program includes educational workshops, concerts, film screenings, and the prestigious Premi Internacional Joan Miró drawing competition. The foundation also collaborates with international institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern for touring exhibitions and research projects.

Management and organization

The foundation operates as a private, non-profit entity under the governance of a board of trustees, which has included notable figures from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council. Its director since 2020 has been Marko Daniel, following previous leaders such as Rosa Maria Malet. Key operational support comes from partnerships with CaixaBank and the Spanish Ministry of Culture. The institution's management oversees the conservation of the collection, the extensive exhibition schedule, and the educational outreach programs that fulfill Joan Miró's original vision of a living, accessible arts center.
