Early life and career

Quentin Cook was born in Bromley and raised in Reigate, Surrey. His early musical education involved playing trombone in the school orchestra before he developed a passion for punk rock. He attended The Polytechnic of Central London, studying English literature, politics, and history. His professional music career began in the early 1980s as a DJ at The Haçienda in Manchester, a legendary nightclub synonymous with the Madchester scene. Prior to his solo breakthrough, Cook was a member of the indie pop band The Housemartins, playing bass guitar. Following the band's dissolution, he formed Beats International, which achieved a UK number-one single with "Dub Be Good to Me," and later the acid jazz project Freak Power.

Adopting the alias Fatboy Slim in 1996, Cook signed with the Brighton-based label Skint Records. His debut album under this name, Better Living Through Chemistry, established the big beat sound. Global mainstream success arrived with his second album, You've Come a Long Way, Baby, in 1998. The record featured iconic singles like "The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You", the latter winning multiple MTV Video Music Awards for its Spike Jonze-directed video. His performances became legendary, particularly his 2002 beach set in his adopted hometown of Brighton, which drew an estimated 250,000 people. He has since headlined major festivals worldwide, including Glastonbury Festival and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

In the early 2000s, he faced and overcame well-publicized struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse. An avid cyclist, he has participated in charity bike rides. Cook was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2023 Birthday Honours for services to music.
