Falcon (comics). The Falcon is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan, the character first appeared in Captain America #117 in September 1969. Sam Wilson, the man behind the mask, is a former social worker from Harlem who becomes the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics and a long-time partner to Captain America.

Publication history

The character was introduced during a period when Marvel was actively seeking to increase diversity in its universe. His debut in the pages of Captain America was followed by his becoming the first African-American superhero to headline a comic series, sharing the title Captain America and the Falcon starting in 1971. Writers like Steve Englehart and Christopher Priest further developed his character and social relevance. After periods with teams like the Avengers and the Defenders, he assumed the mantle of Captain America himself following the events of the 2014 storyline Captain America: Sam Wilson. This role was prominently featured in series written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Daniel Acuña.

Fictional character biography

Samuel "Sam" Wilson grew up in Harlem, where he witnessed the death of his father during a robbery, shaping his commitment to social justice. While working as a social worker, he was manipulated by the Red Skull and his Cosmic Cube into battling Captain America. After breaking free from this control, Wilson aided Captain America against the Red Skull and his organization HYDRA. Bonding with a falcon named Redwing, he adopted the costumed identity of the Falcon. He operated extensively with Captain America, facing foes like the Serpent Society and Baron Zemo. He served with the Avengers during events like the Kree-Skrull War and later led the Mighty Avengers. Following the supposed death of Steve Rogers, Wilson was chosen to become the new Captain America, a role he held during the All-New, All-Different Marvel initiative. He later returned to the Falcon identity and continues to serve as a key member of the Avengers.

Powers, abilities, and equipment

Sam Wilson possesses a unique telepathic and empathic bond with birds, initially limited to his companion Redwing but later expanded. Several alternate universe versions of the character have appeared. In the Ultimate Marvel universe, he is a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and member of the Ultimates. The Marvel 2099 timeline features a different Falcon as an enemy of Spider-Man 2099. In the House of M reality, he is a member of the Kingpin's superhuman enforcers. The Marvel Zombies universe depicts a zombified Falcon, while the Old Man Logan storyline features an elderly Sam Wilson leading a resistance against the Red Skull. The Exiles team also included a version from a reality where he never became a superhero.

The character has been adapted into various forms of media. In animation, he has appeared in series such as The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Avengers Assemble, and Ultimate Spider-Man. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, actor Anthony Mackie portrays Sam Wilson, first appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
