History

The club was established in 1997 by the Sheriff holding company, founded by former KGB officer Victor Gușan and Ilya Kazmaly. It quickly rose through the Moldovan football pyramid, gaining promotion to the Moldovan Super Liga in 1998. Under the presidency of Victor Gușan, Sheriff secured its first league title in the 2000–01 Moldovan National Division, breaking the long-standing dominance of clubs from Chișinău like Zimbru Chișinău.
