The stadium's construction began in 1976 under the auspices of the Government of Cuba and the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, opening its gates in 1977. Its name, "Victoria de Girón," commemorates the Cuban victory at the Bay of Pigs Invasion, a defining event in the early years of the Cuban Revolution. The facility was conceived as part of a national effort to develop sports infrastructure following the success of Cuban athletes at events like the 1975 Pan American Games. It quickly became a central venue for the Cuban National Series and a regular host for matches involving the Cuba national baseball team against rivals like the United States national baseball team and Japan national baseball team.

The stadium features a classic horseshoe design with a single-tier grandstand that wraps around the field, offering unobstructed views for its 20,000 spectators. The playing surface is natural grass, meticulously maintained to meet international standards for baseball. The venue includes dugouts, bullpens, and a manually operated scoreboard. Its location in Matanzas provides a scenic backdrop near landmarks like the Yumurí Valley and the San Severino Castle. Estadio Victoria de Girón has been the stage for numerous historic sporting contests. It was a primary venue for the 1999 Pan American Games baseball tournament, where the Cuba national baseball team claimed the gold medal. The stadium has also hosted multiple editions of the Baseball World Cup, including the 2003 final, and the Intercontinental Cup. Memorable international series have been played here, such as exhibition games against Major League Baseball All-Star teams and the Baltimore Orioles during their 1999 goodwill tour. Renovations

The stadium has undergone several major upgrades to maintain its status. In 1991, improvements were made to seating and lighting in preparation for the 1991 Pan American Games held in Havana. A comprehensive renovation occurred in 1999 for the 1999 Pan American Games, which included expanding seating capacity, upgrading locker rooms, and installing new field drainage systems. Further enhancements in 2011 focused on structural reinforcements, improved concessions areas, and upgrades to player facilities to meet standards for international competitions sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation. These projects were overseen by Cuban construction agencies with input from sports officials.
