Erik Raven

Erik Raven is a rear admiral in the United States Navy who has served in a variety of high-level command and staff positions. His career is distinguished by significant operational experience, including command at sea, and culminated in his appointment as the Under Secretary of the Navy. Raven's service has been recognized with several personal and unit awards for leadership and performance.

Early life and education

Raven was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program after graduating from the University of San Diego. He later earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. His academic background also includes studies at the National Defense University and completion of the Executive Education program at Harvard Business School.

Military career

Following his commission, Raven served as a surface warfare officer with assignments aboard the guided-missile destroyers USS ''John S. McCain'' and USS ''Russell''. He later commanded the guided-missile cruiser USS ''Shiloh'', leading the ship during a deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. His shore and staff duties included serving as executive assistant to the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet and as director of the White House Military Office under the Administration of George W. Bush. He also served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and as a military fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C..

Under Secretary of the Navy

Raven was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the United States Senate in 2021 to serve as the Under Secretary of the Navy. In this role, he served as the Department of the Navy's chief operating officer, responsible for the day-to-day management of the Marine Corps and Navy. His tenure focused on implementing the National Defense Strategy, overseeing major acquisition programs like the Columbia-class submarine and the Ford-class aircraft carrier, and addressing readiness challenges across the Fleet. He worked closely with Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and testified before the House Armed Services Committee on budgetary and policy matters.

Awards and decorations

Raven's personal military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He has also been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. During his command of USS ''Shiloh'', the ship received the Battle Efficiency Award and the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for operational excellence.

Personal life

Raven is married and has children. He has been involved with several naval heritage and support organizations, including the Surface Navy Association and the Navy League of the United States. In his personal time, he is an avid reader of military history.
