Eastern Air Defense Sector. The Eastern Air Defense Sector is a United States Air Force unit and a Geographically Separate Unit of the New York Air National Guard. It is responsible for the air sovereignty and counter-air mission for the eastern United States, operating under the Continental United States North American Aerospace Defense Command Region. Headquartered at the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York, the sector provides critical aerospace warning and aerospace control for North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command.

History

The origins trace to the Cold War-era SAGE system and the establishment of the Rome Air Defense Sector at Griffiss Air Force Base in 1957. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and a major reorganization of North American Aerospace Defense Command, the current unit was activated in October 1995, consolidating several former Air Defense Sectors. It replaced the Boston Air Defense Sector and assumed a significantly larger Area of Responsibility. It includes the critical National Capital Region and major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C.. This airspace contains some of the world's busiest airways and key strategic assets, requiring constant coordination with adjacent sectors like the Western Air Defense Sector and the Canadian Air Defence Sector.

Equipment and systems

Operations are centered on the Battle Control System-Fixed, a key node within the broader Joint Surveillance System network. The sector fuses data from numerous sensors, including Federal Aviation Administration radars, Air Route Surveillance Radar sites, and AN/FPS-117 long-range radars. It maintains direct data links with E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft, RC-135 reconnaissance planes, and fighter aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. The sector also utilizes the Guardian Angel weapon system and interfaces with the NORAD Command and Control System.

Notable incidents and operations

The sector executed the first-ever peacetime shutdown of U.S. civilian airspace and coordinated hundreds of fighter sorties during the September 11 attacks. It has managed numerous responses to Airspace violations and NORAD scrambles, including intercepts of unidentified aircraft approaching the National Capital Region. The unit plays a continuous role in Operation Noble Eagle, providing fighter escort for high-profile events like the State of the Union address and United Nations General Assembly. It also supports real-world missions such as intercepting Boeing 737 aircraft involved in drug interdiction operations over the Caribbean Sea.
